Soccer Mania

Last Saturday, Hil and I did something adventurous. Well, at least it was adventurous to me because it was my first time catching a 'live' soccer match! Yeah! To be honest, I wasn't particularly interested in the match initially. I mean, hello, Singapore versus Malaysia *yawns*...Besides all that long-drawn political tensions and arch-rivalry on the soccer pitch (I just found out), I really didn't think there was much to watch. But Hil was like, "It's the last match before they tear down the national stadium..." That's the thing that caught my attention. Whenever there's a chance, any chance, of being a part of history, I definitely can't resist being in the picture. And then I realised I kena cheated because it's NOT the last game to be played at the stadium. In fact, S'pore will be playing against Thailand tomorrow in the 1st leg of the finals. Ggrrhh.

Here are some pictures to entertain you first.

The tickets...in case you think I'm lying.

This is how we look before the match started.

A disappointing first half.

So, back to the game. I know I'm probably the last person who should be commenting on soccer, but this is serious, if I don't let it out here, I'll go crazy and suffer from soccer-stipation...

I don't follow the game of soccer closely, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't take a blind idiot to tell if a team's playing well. In short, I should just say that the Singapore team AKA the "Lions" kinda suck. Throughout the match, I was thinking, "You gotta be kidding me. Is this the best that S'pore has?" Half the time, the ball is out of play. The other half, the ball is being passed around in such an amateurish fashion that I was almost in tears. I mean, let's face it. Not everyone can play soccer, which is why we just sit back and watch others play soccer. It's a form of entertainment. But if the people who are playing soccer can't even do a half-ass job skillfully, much less entertainingly, then what's the point of soccer in the first place? Now I understand why the support of local soccer is so pathetic. Of course, we can argue that it's precisely because we didn't support them that they are not motivated to play, but think about it, just because no one is watching you do your work doesn't mean you stop working altogether.

Ok lar, I better stop before some die-hard fan come and han-tum me. Despite what's said, I did thoroughly enjoy myself, soaking up in the atmosphere of the soon-to-be-torn-down stadium. So, my predictions for tomm's match: Singapore 0, Thailand 2. Let's hope the team proves me wrong so that I can write another entry about how Singapore soccer is the best in SEA.

Here's a short clip to show you how packed the stadium was and how bored I was. Ha...
