Whatever rocks your boat
I used to hate rock - like seriously totally hate it. Rock songs to me, were empty vessels producing high deafening decibels of noise. Gives me an imaginary headache that every time I hear a rock song, I instinctively switch radio stations. I could never understand how people appreciate that 'junk' when clearly, you can't hear a single word that was being sung amidst the loud distorted sounds of the drums and electric guitars. Did I mention that it's mostly out of tune as well?
Lately, I find myself bobbing to the tunes of Green Day, U2 and Bon Jovi, among others. Ok, it's not exactly rock per se, it's more of alternative rock that draws me. Seems like it's one of those things that you never expect to enjoy, but somehow, it manages to turn around and bite you in the backside. Too bad I missed the whole season of Rock Star: Supernova. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it.
It's funny how the different incidents led up to my eventual liking of the genre. Two weeks ago, I was at Timbre bar with a group of friends and these very words of a song caught my attention and kept me swooned for a good while - "Summer has come and passed. The innocent can never last. Wake me up, when September ends..." (Incidently, it's the 1st day of October, and yes, I've been woken up). Round about that time, Jonathan Leong was also performing on Singapore Idol and he sang a rendition of Chasing Cars which I totally enjoyed.
So you see, Rock is the new jazz. I don't know if it's a short-lived craze or the beginning of a new musical passion. Whatever it is, it definitely rocks my boat.
